Where can I find a lawyer that will take a case on contingency?
A lawyer who takes a case on a contingency basis forgoes up-front fees in exchange for a cut of the amount awarded to the client, ranging from 20 to 50 percent. The client usually must pay court and other costs.
Some lawyers will accept contingency fees on a case-by-case basis. An attorney is not likely to take a weak or extremely complicated case on a contingency basis.
Contingency fees are more common in certain types of cases, such as personal injury and class-action suits.
First, find an attorney with the expertise you need. For help, see the previous FAQ. Describe your case and ask if the attorney will consider taking it on a contingency basis.
