A "privacy policy" is a Web site's official statement on the type of user information it collects, how it uses that information, and how the information can be shared with third parties. The privacy policy will typically include information about how the user's personal information can be removed from the Web site operator's records. Web sites typically post a hyperlink at the bottom of its Web pages liking to the full text of the privacy policy. A Web site not following its own privacy policy opens up the operator to potential liability and regulatory action.
