A "long position" is an investment in a security where the investor owns the security and expects it to go up in value. The opposite is a "short position," where the investor is has "shorted" the stock (in other words, the investor has usually borrowed the stock from a broker and sold it ) with the expectation that its price will go down and the investor will then repurchase the stock at a later date and return the stock to the broker.
