A "direct stock purchase plan" is a program that allows an investor to purchase stock directly from a publicly held company or through a transfer agent. The benefit of such plans is that the investor does not have to pay a brokerage commission for the purchase of the shares. A company's Web site usually describes whether such a plan is available and the terms and conditions for participating in the plan.
